Blizzard developers were blocked from the WAR beta, despite welcoming WAR devs to the Lich King Beta. Blizzard's Jeffrey Kaplan told MTV that after befriending Mythic's Paul Barnett (the lovely chap who said WoW to WAR was like Blackpool to Vegas), he invited him to the Blizzard offices several times and when Lich King was ready for beta, he asked for a list of Mythic workers to send beta keys to.
However, the favour was not returned: %26quot;And then I'm like, 'Hey if you got any beta keys for 'Warhammer,' that'd be awesome,'%26quot; Kaplan said. %26quot;But [Barnett] said that Mark Jacobs wouldn't let me into the beta.%26quot;
When asked why he thought this happened, Jeffrey went on: %26quot;That's a great question,%26quot;he said. %26quot;I'm always fascinated by betas in general and [non-disclosure agreements] and how tight-lipped they tend to be. It's Blizzard philosophy that if you're really confident in your game, then you have nothing to worry about. So I guess that would be my big take away from that.%26quot; Continuing with the interview, Kaplan said that since the launch of WAR, he has managed to get on, but has started to think about quitting due to being on an imbalanced server and a few other things: %26quot;I'm at the point where I'm thinking about quitting because it feels like the best way to level up is in the battlegrounds,%26quot; he explained.
%26quot;But it takes me 30 to 45 minutes to get in the battleground queue. And then when I'm not in the queue, I'm trying to do the Public Quests. But I find that I'm either griefing other people in the Public Quests to try to get influence, or that there's just nobody there.%26quot; Kaplan said he'd switch servers but all his friends were on that server. %26quot;I just feel like we picked wrong, unknowingly.%26quot;
When asked about WAR's UI and the similarity of it to WoW's own user interface, Kaplan graciously points out that it would be silly not to use good ideas from other games (just like Blizzard did when creating several of their own game features).
Finally, MTV asked Kaplan if he was concerned that WAR will take a large chunk of players away from WoW: %26quot;We would obviously be concerned with losing people to [%26quot;Warhammer Online%26quot;] but at the same time, the game stands to bring new people to the MMO market,%26quot;
%26quot;I think if anything, we can stand to benefit. If you happen to come into that game as your first one, and you've never played 'WoW' before, I think ' WoW ' is going to be really exciting when you try it out and feel how different the combat is and just the general [Player Vs. Environment] systems of the game.%26quot; %26quot;We don't want a scenario where there's no other MMOs and 'WoW' is the only kid on the block. I don't really think that's healthy for games in general.%26quot;
In response to this article on MTV Live, EA Mythic's Mark Jacobs defended his actions via a phone call to MTV, and also tackled each of the points raised by Kaplan, including WAR's gameplay issues, the beta admittance rules and using a UI very simialr to WoW's.
